- Born in Willamette, Illinois, Wheelock was educated at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago; in the 1920s she painted at the summer school of the Art Institute of Chicago at Ox-Bow in Saugatuck. Throughout her life, she traveled the United States and Mexico, searching for exotic scenes to paint, including extended periods San Diego and La Jolla, in California.
